Merit Partners is pleased to present this incredibly rare 964 resto-mod built by the renowned AP Car Design out of Gottingen, Germany. Here at Merit, we are very serious about representing original factory cars as we feel these cars provide our clients the best driving experience while allowing the significant opportunity for upside appreciation. With that being said, there are a few exceptions to that rule that provide a client with a driving experience equaling or besting the original car while providing more modern relevance to a classic car and still offering a client potential upside in value or at the very least maintaining value better than other comparable cars. Examples of these types of resto-mods would be companies like: Singer, Guntherwerks, Kaege, Dutchman and AP Car Design.

While the modern buyer loves that classic look of 964 and 993’s, many buyers are desirous of some upgrades to the cars in areas such as: engine, suspension, interior fabrics, seats and technology. The difficult part in all of this is making these upgrades harmonize well together to provide that critical "production car like" look and feel and not just a bunch of parts cobbled together with obvious incongruences. Most companies rebuilding these cars fall well short of those goals showing just how difficult it truly is to improve upon an original factory car. Enter AP Car Design, one of the few builders out there that has achieved something very few builders have been able to accomplish and that is to advance the original car and make it more relevant in terms of engine, suspension, exterior and interior enhancements and technology. We refer to builders like AP as an OEM+ type of car and therefore not something all together different than the stock production car but yet an evolved version of the original car.

AP Car Design has been around since 1992 and has a stellar reputation for building some of the best Resto-mods in the world. We can tell you that driving this AP 964 will obsolete most any factory air-cooled car you will drive while still staying very true to the classic look and feel of the original car. Our CEO owns an AP 964 and Michael Mauer, the Chief of Design for Porsche, commissioned AP to build a car for him, so that in itself says a lot about the exceptional work AP does. This particular car came to us from a good client of ours that has owned multiple AP cars and just got another one creating a need to make some space in his garage.

This car is Fashion Grey over black interior with Pepita R fabric. Mechnically, it features a fully rebuilt 3.6L stock motor largely mimicking the stock motor but through AP’s process and the use of newer technology, power is elevated to approximately 295hp on 93 octane fuel. The narrow body 964 donor was made into a wide-body car with proportions resembling the factory wide-body. It is understated brilliance at its finest as the car has a look and driving feel that gives the best of the classic car experience but elevating it without losing any driver involvement. Other upgrades to this car include the following:

  • Full frame-off restoration and paint
  • Cup exhaust pipe
  • KW Variant 3 suspension
  • Original Porsche sport seats with Pepita R fabric
  • Heated seats
  • Rebuilt G50 gearbox
  • Dashboard converted to Porsche 911F in Pepita R fabric
  • Porsche Classic radio with hi-fi speaker system
  • AP Car Design Fuchs wheels
  • Momo Cup steering wheel without airbag
  • Full leather dash and complete renovation of interior
  • Fully redone retro green gauge cluster
  • 964 Turbo brakes
  • Upgraded LED lights
  • Euro bumper with air flow ducts
  • Sunroof

There is so much more to this car beyond just the build above as the car has a quality about it that even cars like Singer and Guntherwerks don’t capture as well as AP cars being ultra-rare in terms of cars in the US for sale. It is a car to us that tells us where the future of the driver car market is going and for those disappointed by increasingly vague driving experience offered by modern cars. If this car is the future, consider us at Merit excited about it!
